AMFI's half-yearly stock categorisation, based on average market capitalisation over January–June 2026, reshuffled 23 stocks across tiers: six including Hindustan Copper rose from small-cap to mid-cap, eight including BSE, Vodafone Idea and Groww entered the large-cap list, and nine — Hero MotoCorp and Dr. Reddy's among them — slipped from large-cap to mid-cap.

The list looks like housekeeping but moves real money: SEBI's category rules force mutual funds to align portfolios to these definitions, so tier changes redirect institutional flows mechanically.

## Who moved where?

| Move | Stocks |
|---|---|
| Small-cap → Mid-cap (6) | Hindustan Copper, NLC India, AIA Engineering, Ajanta Pharma, Aster DM Healthcare, Sona BLW Precision Forgings |
| Mid-cap → Large-cap (8) | BSE, Vodafone Idea, Hitachi Energy India, Jindal Steel, Indian Bank, Indus Towers, Billionbrains Garage Ventures (Groww), BHEL |
| Large-cap → Mid-cap (9) | Bosch, Siemens Energy India, Hero MotoCorp, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, LG Electronics India, Max Healthcare Institute, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Indian Hotels, Lodha Developers |

The tier boundaries themselves shifted with the market: the large-cap cutoff edged up to roughly ₹1,06,300 crore (from ₹1,05,000 crore in the January 2026 review), while the mid-cap threshold eased to about ₹33,500 crore (from ₹34,700 crore) — a signature of a period when the biggest stocks held up better than the mid tier.

## Why do these lists matter for fund flows?

Because SEBI's scheme rules are hard-wired to them. A large-cap fund must keep at least 80% of assets in the top-100 list; mid-cap funds must hold 65%+ in ranks 101–250. When a stock like BSE or Groww enters the top 100, large-cap funds *can* now buy it and index-tracking money follows; when Hero MotoCorp drops out, large-cap funds must eventually trim it. The result is predictable, fundamentals-free buying and selling pressure around each review — one reason these announcements attract trader attention every January and July.

For fund investors the more useful angle is category integrity: the reshuffle is what keeps your [mid-cap fund actually holding mid-caps](/blog/posts/midcap-and-smallcap-funds-lead-june-2026-equity-inflows-what-investors-should-know). It is also a snapshot of India's shifting corporate hierarchy — an exchange (BSE), a broking platform (Groww) and a telecom-infrastructure firm (Indus Towers) entering the top 100 says as much about where market value is migrating as any index chart.

## What should investors do with this information?

Mostly: understand it, don't trade it. Reclassification effects are well-telegraphed and largely priced by the time lists are final; chasing them is a professionals' game measured in basis points. Check whether your funds' category labels still match your intent (our [Fund Explorer](/fund-explorer) shows category-true rankings on public data), and treat tier changes in stocks you hold as a prompt to re-examine the business case — not as the case itself. The mechanics of the tiers are covered in our [blue-chip stocks explainer](/blog/posts/blue-chip-stocks-in-india-what-they-are-and-why-they-matter).

Classification details are as of AMFI's July 2026 half-yearly review (January–June 2026 averaging period); funds typically get a transition window to realign holdings.
