India's all-India food inflation rate rose from a final 5.32% in June to a provisional 5.52% in July 2026. Headline CPI inflation also rose, from 4.38% to 4.45%. The official July release shows that individual prices moved differently: tomato inflation fell below zero while ginger inflation accelerated.

## What changed between June and July 2026?

| All-India indicator (year on year) | June 2026 | July 2026 |
|---|---:|---:|
| Headline CPI inflation | 4.38% | 4.45% |
| Consumer Food Price Index inflation | 5.32% | 5.52% |
| Rural food inflation | 5.45% | 5.79% |
| Urban food inflation | 5.09% | 5.05% |
| Ginger inflation | 50.41% | 83.62% |
| Tomato inflation | 31.92% | −4.59% |

The [June CPI release](https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2284125&lang=1&reg=1) classified June's figures as provisional. The [July CPI release](https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2298247&lang=1&reg=48), published on August 12, reports June as final and July as provisional.

## Why can a grocery bill differ from the food index?

The Consumer Food Price Index is a national weighted index. A family's own spending pattern may give more or less weight to vegetables, cereals, milk, prepared food or other categories. Geography, shop choice, brands, quantities and substitution also affect the amount paid.

The official releases report observed index and item changes; they do not establish that rainfall, transport costs or sowing conditions caused each movement. Those causal explanations need separate primary evidence and should not be inferred from the inflation table alone.

## What would 5.52% mean in a simple illustration?

Applying 5.52% mechanically to ₹18,000 gives ₹18,993.60, an increase of ₹993.60. That is an illustration of the percentage, not a forecast of a particular household's bill: the national index basket and the household's actual basket will differ.

For budgeting, households can compare like-for-like categories over the same period and separate higher prices from changes in quantity or quality. The site's [household budget playbook](/blog/posts/household-budget-playbook-for-4-38-percent-inflation-practical-ways-to-protect-your-money) provides a general framework, but its figures should also be checked against the latest CPI release.

## Does higher food inflation determine an investment choice?

No. Inflation is one planning input, not a reason to select a particular product. Market-linked investments can underperform or lose value, and no return is guaranteed. Time horizon, liquidity needs, risk capacity, tax treatment and diversification all matter; short-term food-price changes should not be converted into a product recommendation.

Figures were rechecked against MoSPI's June and July CPI releases on August 23, 2026.
