Foreign portfolio investors turned net buyers of Indian equities in July 2026, infusing ₹15,157 crore after four straight months of selling that peaked with a ₹1.17 lakh crore exit in March. They also added ₹9,853 crore to debt, but remain net sellers of roughly ₹2.6 lakh crore of equities for 2026.

One good fortnight does not undo a bruising half-year — yet the reversal matters, because it arrived alongside policy changes designed to make it durable.

## How heavy was the selloff that preceded July?

The 2026 exit was one of the sharpest on record, worse than the comparable period of 2025 (₹1.66 lakh crore):

| Month (2026) | FPI equity flow |
|---|---|
| March | −₹1.17 lakh crore |
| April | −₹60,847 crore |
| May | −₹32,963 crore |
| June | −₹49,340 crore |
| July (to mid-month) | +₹15,157 crore |

The selling tracked the macro stress sequence: the West Asia escalation, crude's spike, the rupee's slide toward 96 per dollar, and downgraded growth expectations. Domestic institutions and retail SIP flows absorbed much of the supply — the dynamic we unpack in [FII vs DII: who's buying, who's selling](/blog/posts/fii-vs-dii-in-2026-who-s-buying-who-s-selling-and-what-it-means-for-the-market).

## What changed in July?

Three things, roughly in order of importance. First, sentiment: reports cite improving domestic macro readings, a steadier rupee and better global risk appetite. Second, valuations: four months of selling left large-caps cheaper relative to their own history. Third — and structurally most interesting — policy: the government exempted FPI income on government securities from tax for investments made on or after April 1, 2026, while the RBI expanded the Fully Accessible Route and scrapped FPI concentration limits under the General Route. Our report on the [FPI tax exemption](/blog/posts/fpi-income-on-government-securities-made-tax-free-what-changed-and-why-it-matters) covers the details.

The flows remain two-sided day to day — FPIs sold a net ₹739 crore on July 15 — which is a useful reminder that monthly totals smooth over plenty of churn.

## What should retail investors read into it?

Less than headlines suggest. FPI flows are a fast-moving sentiment gauge, not a roadmap: the same institutions that sold ₹49,340 crore in June bought ₹15,157 crore three weeks later. The durable takeaways are structural — India's bond market is now materially more open to foreign capital, and the buyer base under the market is broader than it was five years ago because monthly SIP flows (₹31,781 crore in June) no longer depend on foreign mood.

If the July buying persists, expect it to show first in large-cap financials, the sector FPIs sold hardest.
