Government bonds have quietly become one of 2026's most practical retail investments: the 10-year G-Sec yields 6.76% (as of July 17), long bonds pay above 7.7%, and the RBI's Retail Direct platform sells them commission-free from ₹10,000. This guide covers what the numbers mean and exactly how to buy.

Fixed income traditionally reached households through FDs alone while institutions kept the bond market to themselves. That wall is gone — what remains is a knowledge gap, which is fixable in ten minutes.

## What do bond yields actually tell you?

A bond is a loan you make — to the government, for G-Secs — in exchange for fixed interest (the coupon) and your principal back at maturity. The *yield* is your effective annual return at today's price, and it moves opposite to price: when yields rise, existing bonds cheapen; when yields fall, they gain.

The current environment, in three numbers: the repo rate sits at 5.25% with the RBI on a neutral stance, the 10-year G-Sec yields 6.76%, and the RBI's FY27 inflation forecast is 5.1%. Together they say the market pays you a real (above-forecast-inflation) return for lending long to the sovereign — roughly 1.7 percentage points over projected inflation on the 10-year — because [rate cuts have been deferred](/blog/posts/rbi-mpc-june-2026-holds-repo-rate-at-5-25-what-it-means-for-your-emis-and-fds) while crude and food risks persist. Why yields are stuck and what breaks the plateau is covered in our [2026 bond strategy piece](/blog/posts/navigating-the-indian-bond-market-in-2026-yields-strategy-under-a-neutral-rbi).

## How does RBI Retail Direct actually work?

The Retail Direct Gilt (RDG) account is the RBI's direct channel for individuals — no broker, no fees:

1. **Register** at the RBI Retail Direct portal with PAN, a bank account, and standard KYC. The account is free to open and hold.
2. **Choose an instrument:** central government bonds (G-Secs), Treasury Bills (short-term), State Development Loans (SDLs, slightly higher-yielding state debt) and Sovereign Gold Bonds when issued.
3. **Bid in the weekly auction** non-competitively: minimum ₹10,000, multiples of ₹10,000. You accept the auction's cut-off yield — no pricing expertise needed.
4. **Hold or exit:** coupons land in your bank account (typically half-yearly); hold to maturity for the full promised return, or sell earlier on the NDS-OM secondary market at prevailing prices.

A concrete example from the July 10, 2026 auction: retail bidders could buy the 6.36% GS 2031 (five-year money) or the 7.71% GS 2066 (forty-year money) — the second being the kind of multi-decade lock-in that was simply unavailable to households a few years ago.

## How should a beginner structure bond purchases?

| Approach | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Single bond, held to maturity | Buy a tenor matching your goal date | A known future expense |
| Ladder | Split across maturities (e.g. 2031 + 2040s + 2066) | Locking today's rates with reinvestment points |
| Gilt mutual funds | Fund holds a G-Sec portfolio; NAV moves with rates | Flexible money, no lock-in |
| T-Bills via RDG | 91–364 day sovereign paper | Parking cash beyond a savings account |

The one risk to internalise: **price risk is real, default risk is not.** A 40-year bond's market price swings hard with yields — the 10-year is up 46 basis points from a year ago, which marked down existing long bonds — but none of that matters if you hold to maturity, which is why matching tenor to goal is the retail investor's edge. Yields and auction details are as of mid-July 2026 and change with each auction cycle; this is educational content, not a recommendation to buy any specific security.
