For generations, Indian investors have relied on Fixed Deposits (FDs), where the math is straightforward: you lock in a sum at 7%, and you get exactly that 7% back. But as more of us step into the bond market—whether through direct Government Securities (G-Secs) via RBI Retail Direct, corporate bonds, or debt mutual funds—we quickly realize that bonds don't behave exactly like FDs. 

The source of the confusion usually boils down to one crucial metric: **Yield to Maturity (YTM)**.

While the "coupon rate" (the fixed interest the bond pays) catches your eye, the Yield to Maturity is the *true* measure of what you will actually earn. Conversely, if you buy a bond at a **premium** (paying ₹1,050 for a ₹1,000 bond), you will take a ₹50 loss at maturity. Your **YTM will be lower than the coupon rate**.

While exact YTM calculations require complex trial-and-error math or a financial calculator, there is a widely accepted approximation formula that gives you a very close estimate.

2. **Denominator:** (1000 + 920) / 2 = 1920 / 2 = 960
3. **YTM:** 91 / 960 = 0.0947 or **9.47%**

Notice the magic here? Even though the stated interest rate (coupon) is only 7.5%, your *true* return (YTM) is a robust 9.47% because you bought the bond on sale!

## YTM vs. Current Yield: Don't Get Confused

*   **Current Yield** = Annual Coupon / Current Market Price. (In our example: 75 / 920 = 8.15%).
