Across India, the familiar hum of traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) is slowly being replaced by the silent, swift glide of electric cars and two-wheelers. Driven by a growing environmental consciousness, skyrocketing petrol prices, and highly attractive government subsidies under the FAME II scheme and state-specific policies, EVs are quickly becoming a compelling choice for the everyday Indian consumer.
However, as many new EV owners have discovered just before taking delivery, there is a hidden speed bump on the road to green mobility: insurance costs.
When you sit down to finalize the purchase of your sleek new Tata Nexon EV, MG ZS EV, or Ather scooter, the insurance quote might give you a mild shock. On average, a comprehensive insurance policy for an electric vehicle in India can be 15% to 30% more expensive than for a comparable petrol or diesel vehicle.

At first glance, it feels counterintuitive. If EVs have far fewer moving parts, lack complex gearboxes, and require less routine maintenance than ICE vehicles, shouldn’t they be cheaper to insure? To understand the reasoning behind the premium, we have to look at it from the perspective of an insurance underwriter assessing financial risk and repair costs in the Indian market.
The beating heart of an EV is its lithium-ion battery pack. In most electric vehicles sold today, the battery accounts for a staggering 40% to 50% of the total cost of the vehicle. If a severe accident or underbody impact damages the battery pack, it usually cannot be repaired piecemeal; it often must be replaced entirely. Because the financial liability of a single battery replacement is astronomically high, insurance companies must charge a higher premium to cover this outsized risk.
Insurance premiums are directly proportional to the Insured Declared Value (IDV) of your vehicle. Despite generous government subsidies, EVs still command a significantly higher upfront sticker price compared to their petrol or diesel counterparts. A higher IDV naturally translates to a larger “Own Damage” (OD) premium, which forms the bulk of your insurance cost.
If a Maruti Swift gets a dent or a mechanical issue, you can safely take it to almost any local roadside mechanic in India. EVs, on the other hand, require highly specialized handling. Repairing an EV involves dealing with high-voltage electrical systems, which demand specialized training, proprietary diagnostic tools, and strict safety protocols. Currently, India faces a severe shortage of trained EV technicians outside of official company service centers. This reliance on expensive authorized workshops for repairs drives up the average claim cost.
The insurance business is fundamentally a game of statistics and historical data. For petrol and diesel cars, Indian insurers have decades of data on accident frequencies, repair costs, and theft rates across various cities. The EV market, while growing rapidly, is still relatively nascent. This lack of long-term actuarial data makes underwriters cautious, leading them to price premiums slightly higher to cushion against unknown risks.
It is not all bad news for EV buyers. To actively encourage the adoption of green vehicles and reduce carbon emissions, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has mandated a 15% discount on the mandatory Third-Party (TP) insurance premium for electric vehicles compared to equivalent ICE vehicles.
However, since the Third-Party premium is only a small fraction of a comprehensive insurance policy, the heavier Own Damage (OD) premium still makes the overall package slightly more expensive.

For instance, if severe water ingress during the notorious Mumbai monsoons damages your battery pack while the car is parked, a standard policy might reject the claim unless you have the right add-ons. Furthermore, in the case of an accident, standard policies factor in heavy depreciation on plastic parts and the battery (often deducting up to 50% of the replacement value), meaning you could still be left with a massive out-of-pocket expense.
To truly protect your investment, you must customize your EV insurance with specific add-ons. Skipping these to save a few thousand rupees upfront can turn into a catastrophic financial mistake later.
This is arguably the most critical add-on for any electric vehicle. Standard zero-depreciation policies often exclude the battery or cap its coverage. A specific Battery Protection cover ensures that the cost of replacing or repairing the battery due to water ingress, short circuits, or consequential damage is covered completely, without factoring in standard depreciation rates.
Given the exceptionally high cost of EV parts, a “Zero Dep” cover is absolutely essential. It ensures that in the event of a claim, the insurer pays the full replacement cost of the parts (plastics, fibers, glass, and metals) without deducting any amount for age-related depreciation.
Running out of petrol means a quick walk or auto ride to the nearest fuel station with a plastic bottle. Running out of charge in an EV means you are completely stranded and need a flatbed tow truck. Ensure your RSA add-on covers specific scenarios like towing to the nearest EV charging station or authorized service center, and that it addresses high-voltage battery drain situations.
Your EV comes with a wall-box charger installed at your home and a portable charging cable. These accessories are expensive pieces of technology (often costing ₹30,000 to ₹50,000 to replace). A specific add-on can protect these crucial items against theft, fire, or accidental damage, which standard vehicle policies routinely exclude.
If your EV is stolen or totaled in a severe accident, standard insurance only pays the depreciated IDV, leaving you short of funds to buy a replacement. With an RTI cover, you get back the original on-road invoice value of the car, including the road tax and registration charges, allowing you to walk into a showroom and buy a new vehicle without a massive financial hit.
