“Life is unpredictable.” We hear this all the time, but as breadwinners in Indian families, we feel the weight of this truth every single day. Whether you are an office goer commuting through heavy city traffic, or a parent planning for your child’s education, the thought of “what happens to them if I’m not around?” crosses our minds more often than we admit.
Term life insurance is the purest and most affordable way to secure your family’s financial future. But the moment you decide to buy a policy, you hit a massive roadblock: How much term cover do I actually need?
Insurance agents might push you towards expensive endowment policies, or casually suggest a ₹1 crore cover because “it sounds like a big number”. But is 1 crore enough today? With the cost of living and education rising, relying on random guesses is dangerous.
Let’s break down the exact math using a simple, practical formula tailored for Indians. No complicated finance jargon—just straightforward logic.
A decade ago, a term cover of ₹1 crore was considered the ultimate safety net. Today, thanks to inflation, that 1 crore doesn’t stretch as far as it used to.
Consider this: Average retail inflation (CPI) in India currently hovers around 4% to 5%, but “lifestyle inflation” and education costs rise closer to 8% to 10% every year. A 1 crore cover might comfortably replace your income for a few years, but what about paying off the home loan EMI, funding your child’s higher education, and ensuring your spouse has a retirement corpus?
This is why modern financial planners have shifted away from flat numbers. Instead, we use income multipliers.
The most widely accepted thumb rule for retail investors in India today is:
Term Cover = (15 to 20 × Annual Income) + Outstanding Liabilities - Existing Liquid Assets
Let’s break down why this works and how to calculate it step by step.
Why 15 to 20 times? If something happens to you, this payout acts as an income replacement for your family. If your family puts this lump sum into a safe fixed deposit (FD) or conservative mutual funds earning 6% to 7% post-tax, the interest alone can replace your current salary, while the principal amount remains untouched to fight future inflation.
Your term insurance must instantly clear any debt you leave behind. You don’t want your spouse struggling with bank notices or recovery agents while they are grieving.
Add the following to your base cover:
If your family has to use the insurance payout to clear a ₹50 lakh home loan, their actual survival corpus drops significantly. Always add liabilities on top of your income multiplier.
If you want to be extra safe, factor in massive future expenses. For a typical Indian middle-class family, this usually means:
If you already have substantial savings that your family can instantly access, you can subtract this from the total required cover.
Include:
(Note: Do not subtract the value of the house your family lives in, because they won’t sell their primary residence to survive.)
Meet Rahul. He is a 32-year-old IT professional in Bengaluru.
Let’s calculate his ideal term insurance cover:
| Component | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Income Replacement | 20 × ₹12 Lakhs (since he is in his early 30s) | ₹2.40 Crores |
| 2. Add Liabilities | ₹40 Lakhs (Home) + ₹5 Lakhs (Car) | + ₹45 Lakhs |
| 3. Gross Cover Needed | ₹2.4 Cr + ₹45 Lakhs | ₹2.85 Crores |
| 4. Subtract Assets | Savings / EPF | - ₹10 Lakhs |
| Final Term Cover Required | ₹2.85 Cr - ₹10 Lakhs | ₹2.75 Crores |
Rahul should ideally look for a term cover of around ₹2.5 to ₹3 Crores. Because he is 32, a 3 crore cover will be highly affordable—roughly ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 per month. That’s the cost of one weekend dinner with family, spent to secure their entire future.
Knowing the number is just half the battle. When you gather your PAN card and Aadhaar to buy the policy online, keep these three rules in mind:
Agents will try to sell you ULIPs or Endowment plans (“Pay for 10 years, get money back + life cover!”). Say no. These policies offer terrible returns (barely 4-5%) and inadequate life cover (usually just 10x your premium). Buy a pure term plan, and invest your remaining money in mutual fund SIPs or PPF. Keep them strictly separate.
When filling out the proposal form, be 100% honest about your health and habits. Do you smoke the occasional cigarette? Drink alcohol? Have a family history of diabetes? Declare it. If you hide facts to save a few hundred rupees on the premium, the insurance company will reject your family’s claim during the investigation process. A rejected claim defeats the entire purpose of buying insurance.
People obsess over a 99% vs 98% Claim Settlement Ratio (CSR). While you should pick a top-tier insurer with a CSR above 95%, what matters more is the Volume of Claims Settled and the insurer’s reputation. Stick to well-established names with a strong track record of paying out crores.
If you research online, you might come across terms like DIME (Debt, Income, Mortgage, Education) or HLV (Human Life Value).
While these are mathematically rigorous, they can cause “analysis paralysis”. Don’t delay buying insurance because you are stuck on an Excel sheet calculating exact inflation decimal points. The simple 15-20x formula gets you 95% of the way there, which is far better than having zero cover.
Many insurers now offer a feature where your base cover increases by 5% every year to fight inflation. While this sounds great, it makes your premium noticeably higher from day one. A smarter approach is to simply buy a larger flat cover today (e.g., 20x your income instead of 15x). Term insurance premiums are locked in for life; buying a big cover when you are young and healthy is the cheapest way to beat inflation.
Buying term insurance is not a task for next Sunday. If you have financial dependents—whether that’s a spouse, young kids, or aging parents—you need a term plan today.
Grab a piece of paper, write down your annual income, multiply it by 15 or 20, add your home loan, and you have your magic number. Then, go online, compare pure term plans from 2-3 reputed insurers, and get it done. Your family’s peace of mind is worth far more than the minor hassle of filling out an application form.
